Today, India completes 24 years since its victory in the Kargil War against Pakistan. On July 26, 1999, brave Indian soldiers recaptured several peaks in the Himalayas that had been invaded by Pakistani infiltrators in the Kashmir region.

This day is a celebration of the valour and sacrifice of our soldiers. It honours the heroes who fought bravely against the Pakistani forces in the Dras, Kargil, and Batalik sectors of western Ladakh in 1999.

To reclaim the Kargil sector, India initiated “Operation Vijay,” as Pakistani soldiers and terrorists had unlawfully occupied parts of the Indian side of the Line of Control (LoC).

During the Kargil War in 1999, India lost more than 500 soldiers. However, our brave troops managed to push back the Pakistani soldiers from the captured peaks in Kargil, most of whom belonged to the Northern Light Infantry of Pakistan’s neighbouring country.

Kargil War: History

After the 1971 war, relations between India and Pakistan were tense, but neighboring countries had refrained from military conflict until the Kargil War. However, during the 1990s, escalating tensions and conflicts due to militant activities in Kashmir led to this unfortunate confrontation.

Both sides signed the Lahore Declaration in February 1999, promising peaceful and bilateral resolutions to all issues, including Kashmir. Nevertheless, in the winter of 1998-1999, elements of the Pakistani armed forces sent soldiers and terrorists across the Line of Control (LoC) into Indian territory, in what was called “Operation Badri.”

The aim was to weaken India’s military position in the region and disrupt relations between Kashmir and Ladakh. Later, it was discovered that Pakistan’s action was a premeditated attack on India.

Operation Safed Sagar

India’s resolute counter to Pakistan came in the form of “Operation Vijay,” as New Delhi swiftly rallied a formidable force of more than 200,000 troops. On May 25, the government decided to use the Air Force during the Kargil War. The mission bearing the covert moniker “Operation Safed Sagar,” was set into motion by the Indian forces.

The Indian Air Force, in conjunction with the Indian Army, took coordinated action to drive out the Pakistani infiltrators. Alongside, the Indian Navy also played a strategic role in “Operation Talwar,” increasing pressure on Pakistan. The Navy conducted aggressive reconnaissance on Pakistani shores during the war.

After a prolonged battle, the Kargil War finally came to an end on July 26. With unwavering determination, the Indian troops successfully evicted the Pakistani infiltrators from their occupied strongholds, and in commemoration of this significant victory, the nation now observes it as Kargil Vijay Diwas.

Every year on July 26, the Prime Minister pays homage to the soldiers who sacrificed their lives in the war.

Soldiers like Captain Manoj Kumar Pandey, Captain Vikram Batra, and Captain Keishing Clifford Nongrum, who laid down their lives to secure the Kargil heights, were honoured posthumously with the Param Vir Chakra and Mahavir Chakra, the highest military honours in India.

Remembering The Day

Honoring the valor and sacrifice of India’s brave soldiers, “Kargil Vijay Diwas” stands as a symbol of triumph and resilience. This historic day, celebrated with reverence and pride, commemorates the extraordinary bravery displayed during the Kargil War in 1999. From the epic “Operation Vijay” to the covert “Operation Safed Sagar,” the Indian forces exhibited unwavering determination and courage, driving out Pakistani infiltrators from their fortified positions.

As the nation pays tribute to its fallen heroes, it also embraces the enduring legacy of their selfless deeds. With each passing year, it serves as a solemn reminder of the unyielding spirit that binds a grateful nation together.
